JBS: The Brazilian Greenwashing Slaughter
The world’s preeminent meat-processing leviathan, JBS, still entertains the delusion that it executes industrial slaughter with a green, sustainable conscience. Having reincorporated as a Dutch holding entity (JBS N.V.) to facilitate a lucrative dual-listing on the New York Stock Exchange, this corporate giant now finds itself dragged into European courtrooms, forced to substantiate its alleged commitment to environmental stewardship.
There is a grim, poetic irony in watching meat producers like JBS preach compassion and ecological harmony while systematically dismembering millions of living creatures daily. Beneath the pastoral marketing campaigns lies a documented trail of industrial destruction: systemic bribery, labor violations, animal cruelty, and relentless Amazon deforestation. Historically, JBS perfected the art of political lubrication, famously admitting in plea bargains to bribing over 1,800 politicians across the political spectrum to secure government loans and silence regulatory oversight. When combined with price-fixing, tax evasion, and influence peddling, JBS stands as the textbook archetype of a corporate recidivist dressing its slaughterhouse in green camouflage.
The alarm bells are ringing even louder across Sub-Saharan Africa, where JBS recently signed a $2.5 billion agreement with the Nigerian government to construct six industrial livestock facilities. While corporate executives repackage this expansion as a benevolent effort to combat local food insecurity, civil society and local agricultural communities were given no prior notice or meaningful consultation regarding the arrival of this meat-processing juggernaut. Given the company’s operating model, coupled with its recent decision to quietly abandon its flagship “Net Zero by 2040” pledge and scrub indigenous land protections from its policies, there’s little doubt that local ecosystems will be cleared and smallholder farmers displaced to fuel international supply chains.
Fortunately, the legal dragnet is tightening. Utilizing Dutch evidence laws, Greenpeace Netherlands launched legal proceedings against JBS N.V. in Amsterdam, seeking court orders to compel corporate transparency regarding its global expansion plans and forcing senior executives, including the infamous Batista family, to testify under oath. This follows legal enforcement by the New York Attorney General, who penalized JBS USA for deceptive greenwashing practices and unsubstantiated climate claims. Whether the Dutch Courts of Justice can successfully unpack JBS’s true intentions remains an open question, but one truth is indisputable: at JBS, the only thing truly being sustainably recycled is corporate hypocrisy.
