Daniel Ortega’s Dictatorial Bow

This is the sublime, tragicomic portrait of a lifelong revolutionary turned absolute dictator. Daniel Ortega, once the dashing Sandinista guerrillero who helped overthrow the brutal, US-backed Somoza dictatorship in 1979, spent his youth preaching liberation and a free Nicaragua. None of that survived. Ortega braved decades of revolution, exile, and political maneuvering only to undergo a grotesque metamorphosis into the very tyrant he once took up arms to destroy.

Since returning to the presidency in 2007, Ortega elevated rigged elections into high performance art. Across successive terms, his official vote tallies ballooned with mathematical absurdity: from a modest 38% in 2006 to 62% in 2011, 72% in 2016, and a staggering 76% in 2021, the latter secured only after systematically arresting every viable opposition candidate and shuttering independent media. Mirroring Vladimir Putin’s autocratic legalism and Kim Jong Un’s dynastic flair, Ortega capped his legislative coup with early 2025 constitutional reforms that designated his wife, Rosario Murillo, as official co-president.

Yet even elaborate political theater eventually exhausts its director. On July 19, 2026, the 47th anniversary of the revolution, the 80-year-old authoritarian finally abandoned the democratic farce altogether. Announcing bluntly that “there will be no more elections,” Ortega unilaterally closed the electoral curtain. Why waste State funds printing fake ballots and staging performative votes when one can simply rule by decree?

At 80, the weary autocrat prefers absolute comfort and control without moving too much. By formally outlawing opposition ballots, Ortega spares himself the tedious chores of pretending to be a democrat. He has achieved the ultimate autocratic milestone: transitioning from anti-imperialist freedom fighter to a monarchical dictator, proving that the tragic end of his revolutionary promise is just an old tyrant refusing to yield his chair.
