Monks’ Illegal Enlightenment

Funny cartoon of monks returning from a spiritual retreat with suspicious suitcases at Sri Lankan customs checkpoint.

Righteous enlightenment was the task for twenty-two monks,

Their sammā-ājīva was carried in their luggage;

Yet none could answer the legal question,

Just the urge to deliver a few grams ahead on the Nirvana path.

Those monks, no shame in their faces and no wonder in their thoughts,

Saw sammā-kammanta in their belongings as the “paradise plant.”

What an unfortunate gift for Buddhism,

As the monks dreamed of a life like their masters in the mountains,

But not even the Buddha pondered overcoming the customs of modern prohibition.

 Yet, these followers in orange robes, with their avihiṁsā deeds,

Were told the kush plant was a donation of Bangkok legality;

Their sammā-diṭṭhi grew too blurry to discern the bridge between innocence and corruption.

Here they held their "Noble Truth" and the Dharma of their woes;

Now, the young monks face the bars, where meditation might reveal just how awful choices were.
