Happy New Bombing Year
In the year 2026 of the Christian Era, the world woke up to its finest hour: a shower of tactical missiles raining down on Caracas (“freedom bombs," some might call them) on the morning of January 2nd. Locals, however, mistook the blasts for the mortal fireworks of a lingering New Year’s Eve celebration.
Experts on the art of war, akin to Sun Tzu, predicted that this event could have happened sooner, given the nature of the self-proclaimed “Legitimate President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," Mr. Nicolás Maduro Moros, who famously concealed the voting records of the last presidential election. However, why now and not twelve or twenty-eight years ago? It seems the US was waiting for some kind of permission from within the South American country. One wonders from whom, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate perhaps?
It is a fair question that opens Pandora’s Box, revealing a paradox that experts in international relations and international law have long dreamed of. On the one hand, we have a corrupt autocratic regime that caused 20% of the Venezuelan population to flee the country, a major humanitarian crisis and one of the largest diasporas in history. Many hypotheses meander here. The first, popular within conspiracy theories, is that the Maduro regime is, in fact, a Narco-State (there is no serious public proof of this, though the DOJ, under Trump's administration, managed to “find" plenty). The second is that the regime is a puppet of Russia and China, countries that financially and politically support the government to maintain a power balance in the region against the USA. A third, and the most likely, is that Maduro and his cronies created a “Gang-State," which faces serious accusations of human rights violations from the moribund UN. Looking at these factors, one sees a tangled web that ultimately delivered the "green light" for this anticipated peace process.
Therefore, the bombs. The US military "freedom action" responds to our first hypothesis, with undertones of the second and third. In fact, in 2020, the Justice Department designated the Venezuelan government as “terrorist" for the apparent exportation of cocaine into the star-spangled noses of the North. This designation gave plenty of power to Donald “Sleepy-Toddler" Trump to execute his deeper desire for conquest. Needless to ask: why, then, did he just pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was accused of drug and arms trafficking and sentenced to 45 years in federal prison?
We can then refresh our short-term memory with the words of our Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Ms. María Corina Machado, a longtime fighter against the Bolivarian Revolution and a close friend of the United States and Israel. In December 2025, she said in an interview, “I will welcome more and more pressure so that Maduro understands that he has to go." Wise words for a Nobel Peace Prize winner. The country now enters a deep chaos; some are celebrating the violence, and others are skeptical about the upcoming future. Bombs are dropping, and there are threats of more violence if there is no subjugation; hence, the beginning of the “peace process."
