The Sailor & the Mob

Poetry for Youth

Let me sail to the horizon of freedom,

the sailor said to the mob at the port.

The sun waved its heat,

the sea claimed its peace,

the boat stood steady, ready to board,

and time struck the perfect second to leave.

Let us be the experience,

let us be the error,

let us be the danger,

let us be the chant,

sang the sailor to the mob.

The wind began to blow toward the unknown.

Let us find new ports,

let us embrace the shock,

let us surrender fear,

let us explore the Earth,

the sailor continued from the crow’s nest.

Don’t go! Cried the worried mob.

The ocean is too vast and wild,

the waves are too frightening and cruel,

the other ports are either too small or too big.

Here is home, where you belong.

I hear you, and I feel you, answered the sailor.

Letters in verse will narrate the odyssey,

so your worries may sail away with my journey;

fear is your stuck engine,

so let it be, as let me see the world in all its shapes.
