The New World Order Hypocrisy

Mark Carney in his double standards: a old speech of world order, while having major deals with China and Qatar.

Political speech is rooted in Ancient Greece, where civic deputies debated city policies. Each orator presented his grievances (it was a man’s world, after all) to persuade the masses on matters of international relations: whether to produce more wine or invade Sparta. These debates could last hours, even days; the depth of the philosophy shaped Western political culture as we know it. For the sake of inclusion, let’s not leave the East behind, Confucius was doing much the same work.

Fast-forward to Davos: the mega-rich playground for business and hollow small talk. It was supposed to be a highlight of “Greek" oratory. However, the intellectual caliber today is a far cry from ancient times. Yet, one particular speech made the world tremble.

Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, took the microphone. The room was packed to the back row; journalists were everywhere. For seventeen minutes, Carney declared the "old-world order" dead. He spoke of the “Sword of Damocles" being swung by superpowers against a world that cannot defend itself from tyranny.

It sounds familiar, doesn't it? The “Global South" has been shouting about this imperial, colonialist madness in every UN Assembly and Non-Aligned Movement meeting since the 1950s. And who listened? No one.

Of course, the context is the chaos in the United States, Canada's neighbor and primary commercial partner. Donald “Napper-Toddler" Trump is being ruthless with tariffs and commercial retaliation because Carney refuses to surrender. But foremost, the friction exists because of what the Canadian PM has been doing with the “enemy," China.

A massive deal for electric vehicles was recently signed between the two countries. It’s a clear paradigm shift in international relations when a leader plays both sides. Is this a move to provoke our American “pseudo-dictator"? Is it a play for political visibility at home? Or is it simply a desperate grab for new deals now that our primary partner has closed the tap?

We all praised Carney’s speech as if we’d never heard such truths before. Perhaps it’s because those truths weren't previously delivered in “Queen's English" by a former colony. Carney’s level of hypocrisy is preposterous. The outcomes are nil. We’re in Davos, after all. Who actually cares what is said here?

While the orators speak, Gaza is still being bombed; Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine. China maintains its Social Credit oppression and surveillance; US democracy is on life support; climate change is accelerating; inequality is at its highest peak since the 1930s with the richest 1% accumulating 70% of the world's wealth; drug and human trafficking still a scourge; no one has been jailed because of the Epstein files…

In what reality are these politicians, academics, journalists living?
