The “Shaped-Truth” Prize on Information
In an information contest, three major participants had a tie due to their untrustful practices on how to deal with truth. Donald Trump brings 34 felony convictions for falsifying business records to the stage. Benjamin Netanyahu arrives as a wanted man following the International Criminal Court prosecutor requesting an arrest warrant for using starvation as a weapon of war. Vladimir Putin anchors the trio with an active international arrest warrant of his own. All three contestants have achieved the highest prize of “Shaped-Truth”. The citizens living under their jurisdiction have absolutely no idea what’s happening inside and outside their own borders. And whistleblowers face prison, exile, or death simply for trying to show the public the atrocities committed in their name.
Trump declared war on the press the moment journalists stopped treating him as a harmless casino operator and started documenting his rampant bigotry and pedophile behavior. He spent decades dragging reporters into court for writing accurate sentences. Now that he occupies the presidency for a second term, he treats constitutional oversight as treason. He cannot process together a coherent sentence at a podium, yet he demands the press frame his disastrous geopolitical maneuvers as a chess master plays. He has stumbled into an outnumbered military conflict he can’t even count well. He simply commands the press to report that marginalized communities are enjoying an unprecedented era of peace.
The Associated Press, CNN, and Politico are banned from the White House briefing room. Trump believes he’s the senile owner of the facts. Pete Hegseth, the secretary of unfinished wars, has publicly encouraged that major outlets adopt headlines more sympathetic to the administration's military fiascos. To protect the president’s fragile ego from the disastrous polling surrounding his Iran campaign and his wife’s jealousy, Natalie “the printer” Harp follows him everywhere. She serves up curated, sycophantic internet praise on demand. Fox News hosts, right-wing podcasters, and paid influencers have entirely replaced the objective press corps. The American executive branch now operates with the transparency of a dictatorship.
Benjamin Netanyahu either taught Trump this playbook or perfected it. He dragged his country into a devastating multifront war to outrun his own criminal corruption trial, but the Israeli public is deliberately shielded from the resulting carnage. When journalists Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor released “Naza” (No Other Land), a documentary detailing military atrocities and forced displacement, the government engineered a massive domestic blackout. The Israeli public is forbidden from seeing footage of soldiers admitting they were ordered to carry out massacres. Netanyahu looks at a leveled strip of land where civilians starve and publicly decrees it a liberated zone with a surplus of food.
Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi and Netanyahu drafted legislation to formally hand control of the national media network to their extremist political coalition. But the High Court had to step in and annul the procedures. The judges pointed out the glaring conflict of interest of a Prime Minister awaiting a criminal verdict trying to own the printing presses. Back to Naza, the documentary filmmakers faced the immediate wrath of Bibi and his extremist friends and hooligans. Likud party officials requested to strip off their citizenship and government-aligned supporters gathered outside their homes with threats of demolition. This is the explicit reward for documenting reality in Israel.
Vladimir Putin closes this podium of despots. His absolute strangulation of trustworthy information predates the others by two decades. Since taking control of a declining State, he has utilized the Kremlin’s vast resources to hallucinate a return to Soviet imperial borders. To Putin, there’s no grinding, catastrophic invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin mandates that the conflict is merely a surgical military operation required to cleanse a neighboring country of imaginary nationalist enemies.
However, the United Ukraine think tank released a June 21 report cataloging the exact mechanics of this state-sponsored delusion. The Kremlin is manufacturing millions of fake videos designed to legitimize the slaughter. They flood the domestic internet to keep the Russian populace entirely detached from the reality of the front lines. Putin packages his totalitarian regime and sells it to the world as a functioning, normal democracy. In contrast, the physical evidence buried in mass graves proves otherwise.
This contest of manufactured realities remains open. These three leaders simply set the current standard for erasing the truth and replacing it with whatever keeps them out of a jail cell.
