We Need A World Therapist

Marco Rubio's therapy with the European Union. NATO is behind playing as couples' therapist.

Is it possible for a psychologist to serve in diplomatic conflicts? This concept could be invaluable today, when national leaders are so sensitive to any dispute. Is this the role of the United Nations and NATO? Perhaps they are hiring the wrong professionals: political scientists, international relations experts, economists, anthropologists, sociologist, lawyers (far too many of them), translators (but they'll be replaced by AI bots). In reality, a couples’ therapist, preferably a woman, would likely do a far better job of resolving these clashes.

We witnessed Marco Rubio’s speech in Munich, at a Security Conference where worldwide leaders and military experts discuss war: how to prevent it with more war, and how to close deals with the defense industry, very “peace-building," indeed. The address by the U.S. Secretary of State (Trump’s third puppet) was applauded for its sophisticated language and polished diplomacy. Yet, behind those elegant, well-placed words lies the imperial agenda of the new American autocracy.

Indeed, international institutions require change, but who will be in charge, and under what conditions? We have seen the NATO Secretary General transforming the institution to align with Trump & Co. directives; the World Bank is now lending money for the “Board of Peace”; and the UN remains powerless against bullies, merely producing reports on the failings of humanity. As Rubio aptly noted, “the old-world order and its institutions, the ones we built together, must be reformed…”

This is the moment when a therapist steps in. He or she could be disguised as one of the old-world order institutions, like the UN or NATO. The context of the mediation is between the US and European Union, as both partners struggle to coexist. Primarily, their conflict concerns cultural identity, it seems the very premises of freedom, surveillance democracy, and religion are at stake. Naturally, the genuine issues of security were never touched upon by Rubio: Russia, China, and Israel remained absent from the Western front.

A certain imperialism nostalgia seems to grip our couples. It’s a reminder that as the right and far-right gain power in Europe, coupled with the shift toward autocracy in the United States, old-school colonialism is back on track after a century-long nap. How could a couples’ therapist handle this violent delusion of grandeur? No one can claim now that U.S. speeches are indifferent or merely misplaced. The aim is clear, even if it’s a hollow monologue of keywords designed to entertain diplomatic ears and the masses alike.

We must certainly transform the old world order into something fresh. The UN and NATO should function as a unified international therapist, where heads of state go without the fear of shattered egos to solve conflicts away from cameras, journalists, and politicians. It should be a retreat where anger, hatred, and misunderstanding can be washed away, leaving only peace.
